A fallen tree in your yard is a different kind of problem than a tree that needs trimming or a planned removal. The tree is already on the ground, often resting on something it shouldn’t be – a house, a fence, a vehicle, a driveway – and the longer it sits there, the worse things tend to get. Roof damage gets worse with each rain. Sap and rot start working on whatever the tree is leaning against. Access to the property may be blocked, and if the tree took down a hydro line on the way down, the situation isn’t just inconvenient – it’s dangerous.
Southwestern Ontario sees a steady mix of weather and natural conditions that can put trees under serious stress throughout the year. Summer thunderstorms often bring strong winds that can break large limbs or even uproot entire trees, while winter ice storms can coat branches in heavy glaze that becomes too much for them to support. In other cases, trees that have already weakened over time may fail without warning, and heavy wet snow in the shoulder seasons can be enough to snap branches or bring down whole sections, especially when trees are still holding their leaves.
This is a practical guide to what to do when a tree comes down on your Ontario property – what’s safe to handle yourself, what isn’t, and how a real tree service approaches the work. First Things First: Stay Safe
Before anything else, check for the immediate dangers. The most serious ones to look for:
- Contact with a hydro line. If any part of the tree is touching, leaning on, or near a power line, do not approach it. Call Hydro One or your local utility to report it. The line has to be confirmed de-energized before anyone goes near the tree.
- Damage to the house. If the tree hit your home, do not enter rooms that look structurally compromised. A heavy tree sitting on a damaged roof keeps doing damage as the wood settles and the structure flexes.
- Hanging limbs or wood that hasn’t fully fallen. After a major event, the most dangerous thing in the yard isn’t always the tree on the ground – it’s the limb still partly attached up in the canopy. Climbers call these widow-makers, and they fall without warning.
- Family and pets. Keep everyone clear of the damaged area, especially curious kids and dogs.
Once the immediate hazards are addressed, you can take a breath. The cleanup work itself can wait until you have the right people and the right plan.
Document Everything Before You Touch It
If the tree damaged a structure on your property – house, garage, shed, fence, vehicle – your home insurance probably covers the removal and repair. But the claim works much better when you have proper documentation, and the documentation has to happen before anything moves.
What to capture with your phone:
- Wide photos of the entire scene from several angles.
- Close-up photos of structural damage – roof, walls, gutters, windows, decking.
- Photos of the tree’s trunk and root system. Exposed roots on the side opposite the lean often show that the tree’s roots failed, which matters for insurance.
- A video walk-around narrating what you’re seeing, especially helpful if the damage is complex.
- Photos of any debris that landed on the roof or in the gutters.
Call your home insurance company within 24 hours. Most carriers in Ontario have 24-hour claim lines, and earlier reporting usually means smoother claim resolution. The insurer will ask what happened, what’s damaged, and whether anyone was hurt. They’ll usually want you to take steps to prevent further damage (like tarping a roof hole) but to leave the major cleanup until an adjuster has documented things.
Why You Shouldn’t Cut It Yourself

Plenty, as it turns out. When a tree falls, the wood ends up resting in positions it wasn’t designed for. Parts of the trunk and limbs are stretched. Other parts are compressed. - Watch for delayed roof leaks. Trees on roofs can shift shingles and damage underlayment in ways that don’t leak until the next heavy rain. Check ceilings and the attic after the next big storm.
- Look at the trees near the one that fell. Trees in similar conditions and exposure often have similar problems. If one came down, the next one over may not be far behind.
- Keep an eye on fence and hardscape damage that wasn’t obvious right away.
- If you noticed any new symptoms or damage after the work was done, document it and let your insurance adjuster know in case it needs to be added to the claim.
