Grinding vs. Full Removal
Two approaches with different use cases:
- Stump grinding. A grinder reduces the stump to mulch from the top down, 6 to 12 inches below grade. The roots stay in the ground and decompose naturally over the next few years. Faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive to the surrounding lawn. The right approach for nearly every situation.
- Full stump removal. Physically excavating the entire stump and root ball. Necessary when the spot will hold a foundation, an outbuilding, or a tree planted in exactly the same location. More expensive and harder on the surrounding yard.

Our Process
1. Free quote. We measure the stump, check for obstacles (rocks, irrigation lines, drainage tile), and give you a firm price on the spot.
2. Utility check. Before any grinding, underground utilities have to be located. Ontario One Call locates are required by law before digging – we handle the call.
3. Grinding. The grinder reduces the stump and the surface roots radiating from the base. Most stumps take 30 minutes to a few hours depending on size and species.
4. Cleanup. Chips can stay on-site as mulch, be left in a pile for you to spread, or be hauled away. Your call.

Most residential stump grinding in Southwestern Ontario falls into these ranges:
- $100 to $200 for a small stump (under 30 cm across).
- $200 to $400 for a medium stump (30 to 60 cm).
- $400 to $800+ for a large stump (over 60 cm), with hardwood species at the high end.
