What Brush Hogging Covers

Brush hogging uses heavy-duty rotary cutting equipment designed for vegetation that standard lawn tools can’t handle. It clears dense growth like tall grass, weeds, briars, thick brush, and small saplings (typically up to a few centimetres in diameter). The material is cut and left on the ground to break down naturally over time.

Common applications include:

  • Overgrown field and pasture mowing — restoring neglected land to usable condition
  • Fence line and field edge clearing — improving access and visibility along property boundaries
  • Trail and laneway cutting — opening up rural access routes and recreational paths
  • Vacant lot and acreage maintenance — keeping larger properties manageable and under control
  • Regrowth control — maintaining previously cleared areas to prevent them from overgrowing again
  • Hunting and recreational land maintenance — improving access and usability of wooded or semi-open areas
  • Private right-of-way clearing — keeping access corridors open on rural properties

Brush Hogging vs. Forestry Mulching

Different tools for different jobs:

  • Brush hogging cuts grass, weeds, brush, and small saplings, leaving the material in place to break down. Best for fields, pastures, and lighter growth.
  • Forestry mulching grinds heavier growth – larger saplings, small trees, dense brush – into mulch in a single pass. Better for thicker, woodier vegetation (see our forestry mulching page).

Often the right answer is a combination – brush hogging for the open fields and lighter areas, forestry mulching where the growth is heavier. We’ll recommend the right approach during the walkthrough.

Brush Hogging Cost

Brush hogging is typically priced by acreage and vegetation density. Lighter open fields cost less per acre; heavy, dense growth costs more. Minimum charges apply for small jobs. Recurring maintenance contracts available at better per-visit rates for ongoing work. The on-site quote gives you a firm number.

Very Sharpe service! I had 5 VERY large, dilapidated maple trees (5ft+ diameter) that needed to be taken down. I phoned Monday, received a quote within 24 hours, and had the trees taken care of by Friday. Communication was excellent with quality advice. I will definitely be using Sharpe Tree Service for any future work.

I would give Ron and crew at Sharpe Tree Service 10 stars if I could. They came out on short notice and did a very professional job and made short work of the task at hand. This company will definitely be my go-to tree service from now and in the future.
