Trimming vs. Pruning
The terms get used interchangeably but they describe different work:
- Trimming focuses on clearance, safety, and appearance – removing limbs that have grown into the wrong place, opening sight lines, reducing weight on heavy lateral branches.
- Pruning focuses on long-term tree health and structure – removing dead, diseased, or weakly attached wood, shaping young trees for strong scaffold branches, opening the canopy for air and light.

What We Do When Pruning Trees (And What We Never Do)
Proper pruning techniques that follow industry standards and protect the tree:
- Crown cleaning – removing dead, dying, diseased, and broken branches throughout the canopy.
- Crown thinning – selectively removing live branches to reduce density and improve air and light, without over-thinning.
- Crown raising – lifting the lower canopy to provide clearance over driveways, walkways, and sight lines.
- Crown reduction – properly reducing tree size by cutting back to lateral branches that can take over as new leaders. Not topping.
- Structural pruning – shaping young trees to develop strong structure for the next 50 years. One of the highest-value services available.
Practices we never use because they damage trees:
- Topping – cutting the entire top off a tree to reduce its height. Triggers weak, dense regrowth and creates lasting damage. We never top, regardless of who asks.
- Lion-tailing – stripping all interior foliage and leaving only the tips of branches. Moves weight to the ends and dramatically increases failure risk.
- Flush cuts – cutting branches off flush with the trunk. Removes the branch collar where healing happens and creates an entry point for decay.
Ice and Wind Preparation
Southwestern Ontario weather is the main reason properly trimmed trees outperform unmaintained ones over time. The risks change with the season:
- Winter ice events load limbs with hundreds of pounds of glaze in a few hours – the leading cause of catastrophic limb failure in Southern Ontario. Trees properly pruned of deadwood and weak unions handle ice loads dramatically better.
- Summer thunderstorms and tornadic outflow events bring 80–120 km/h winds that find every weak union, every long lateral limb, every dead branch hidden in the canopy.
- Heavy wet snow in early spring and late fall – when leaves are still on the trees – adds load the canopy wasn’t designed to carry.
- Saturated soil during heavy rain events reduces root anchorage, making leaning and uprooting more common on trees that handled dry conditions fine.
Pre-season trimming targets the dead and weakly attached wood, the long over-extended laterals, and the limbs hanging over structures – exactly the failure points the next weather event will find.
When to Trim Trees in Ontario?
Timing depends on species:
- Most hardwoods (maple, oak, ash, hickory, beech): late winter while dormant is ideal – clean cuts, fast healing, easy visibility on bare branches.
- Oaks specifically: avoid pruning April through October to reduce risk of attracting beetles that spread oak wilt.
- Maples and birches: heavy sap flow in late winter is normal but not harmful; for cosmetic reasons, summer pruning after leaves are fully out can be preferred.
- Flowering trees (crabapple, lilac, magnolia, serviceberry): right after they bloom, to protect next year’s flowers.
- Evergreens (cedar, spruce, pine, fir): late winter to early spring.
- Hazardous or storm-damaged limbs: any time, as soon as identified.
How Often is Trimming Necessary?
Most mature trees benefit from trimming every 3 to 5 years. Faster-growing species like silver maple and Manitoba maple need attention more often. Slow-growing species like white oak and ironwood can sometimes go longer. Young trees benefit from light structural pruning every year or two during their first decade – these early cuts pay dividends for the next 50 years.
